Control the tongue base – Control the airway

The tongue base, connected to the epiglottis and the larynx, is the main cause of airway obstruction and difficult intubation. Moving the tongue base anteriorly without changing the mouth’s overall anatomy is the easiest and most reliable method of opening the airway. Doing so also keeps the larynx in the midline of the mouth and pulls the larynx toward the mouth slightly, both of which facilitate successful intubation.
